Born into Light

Extreemly interesting and paints clear images in your mind.
I've been looking for this book for many years, but since it is out of print I haven't had any luck finding it. I first read this book in Grade 7 (I'm in Grade 11 now)and at that time I was getting into the paranormal realm and horror genre. This novel was about a boy found by localers in a small town, by an area with scorch marks on the earth. At first he can not speak, and is ignorant on activities which we perform in everyday life. As the weeks progress however, it becomes evident that the child is highly intelligent. His siblings begin to question who he is and where he comes from as the story evolves. (see questions asking " was it alien, animal or angel?") I loved this book and give it 4 or 4.5 stars out of 5. This is one book that lets you decide what the truth of the child is, or rather, the truth of what exists.

Boston (Photographic Tour)
Published in Hardcover by Random House Value Pub (April, 1997)
Authors: Ted Landphair and Carol M. Highsmith
Average review score:

Boston
This is a good book as a souvenir and after having visited Boston six times, I know many of the places photographed and can vividly recall the moments I spent there. There's a detailed introduction looking at all aspects of Bostonian life, including some fabulous old photographs. The rest of the book presents the modern-day town, from the architecture to its people, traditional and contemporary. A lot of the photographs focus on detail, with some good camera angles, but I feel some more general views could have been used to get a better impression of this fantastic town.

The Boston Food Lover
Published in Paperback by Perseus Publishing (May, 1996)
Author: Lise Stern
Average review score:

great guide to local food
This book is a great resource, particularly for people in living in the Boston area. Unlike most food guides, it isn't really a review of restaurants (though some are included). It focuses on where to find the best butcher, the best bread, and most interesting to me - where to find ingredients for ethnic cooking.

My husband and I sometimes pick a style of food we want to prepare - say Middle Eastern - then consult the book for where to find some of the less common ingredients. Because many of the ethnic groceries are in ethnic neighborhoods, we make a day of it by exploring an area we haven't visited before.

My only critism of the book therefore, is that the book doesn't include neighborhoods in the index.

Boston's West End
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (19 October, 1998)
Author: Anthony Mitchell Sammarco
Average review score:

Very informative - A sad story which had to be told.
The photographic essay which is this book is quite remarkable. Not many communities in the world have seen such complete annilation short of destruction by war or natural disaster. This working class city neighborhood, which somehow did not fit into the masterplan, was completely destroyed. I wish it explained how it happened, how the government was able to kick everyone out of their homes. This photo essay portrays an awesome sense of community and neighborhood which once was, never to be replaced by the highrise apartments which were erected in its place. The replacement community, which has developed over the past 35 years was not a fair trade. Anyone who sees what is there now and compares it to what was clear cut away will agree. The plight of the Westenders is not easy to argue with after seeing the pages. After seeing the photographs you can't help but feel very sad for the people and what happened to them in the old West End. This is a true must read for anyone who now resides in Charles River Park and anyone who is doing research on urban renewal.

The Cape Cod Garden
Published in Paperback by Paraphyses Press (June, 2002)
Author: C. L. Fornari
Average review score:

Seaside and cape gardeners will find practical information.
Cape Cod gardeners from beginners to experienced respect this book. But it may be useful to any gardener with Cape-like growing conditions. The question and answer format is easy to use thanks to a good index and chapter divisions. The biggest drawback is shortage of drawings and no pictures. Plant lists organized by need (for example,Seaside ground covers, Low maintenance shrubs) would be useful for gardeners in similar environments to the Cape.

Cape Cod Street Atlas-Including Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket

Author: Arrow Map
Average review score:

Good Tool for Exploring the Cape!
Traveling the ever-famous Cape Cod is a wonderful experience! But getting lost while driving is definately not a wonderful experience! The Cape Cod Atlas is detailed and provides a great deal of helpful info for those making the journey on the Cape.

It is big enough to read, so there is no eye-squinting involved. It includes landscapes and several other points of interest, as well as campsites and lighthouses.

For those who frequent the Cape, this will be your bible!

Alabama : Atlas of Historical County Boundaries
If you're interested in this sort of thing as I am this book could be of great value however the price is unreal. I have a CD that does much the same for the entire country at a third the price of one state however this book is MUCH more accurate and shows county boundaries that only occured for as little as three days. The CD is also easier to use. That said I'll likely ask for the book as one of those Christmas presents I wouldn't buy for myself.

Connecticut Off the Beaten Path (4th Edition)

Authors: David Ritchie and Deborah Ritchie

Parents happy
I bought this for my parents as they had recently moved from California to Conn. They love this book as it has allowed them to find some great bedroom communities nearby.
A true review would be from someone who knows the area, but for outsiders this was a great purchase.

A Country Doctor
Published in Paperback by New American Library Trade (November, 1994)
Authors: Sarah Orne Jewett, Joy G. Boyum, and Ann Shapiro
Average review score:

Interesting Perspective
What an enjoyable book! As a 19th century novel,it's slow paced enough to reflect upon the value of one's life and work. The young heroine's plan to study medicine is unaccepted by many people, but Nan is determined. She is lucky to have the backing of her guardian, himself a doctor. His thoughts about and support of her decision are very progressive for the time, and heart-warming. Nan's choice is challenged when she meets an attractive young man. The mores of the time demand that she choose between marriage and a profession. The weight that a profession carried at that time made it more a vocation than simply a job. A person chose seriously, his/her future as her life-long identity and contribution to humanity. This novel was thought producing, and its perspective interesting - I recommend it.
